PLWF305 Filter vs. Pump Sponge

The PLWF305 is assigned its own RFID replacement filter, not the classic Dockstream filter, and that filter includes a pre-filter sponge alongside the cartridge.

SHORT ANSWER

Is the white cartridge the same thing as the black sponge?

No—and the more important point is upstream of that question. PETLIBRO assigns the PLWF305 its own RFID replacement filter, which is a different product from the classic Dockstream filter used by the original three fountains.

That RFID filter is described as containing activated carbon, ion-exchange resin, non-woven fabric, and a pre-filter sponge. So the cartridge and the sponge are two parts of one assembly, doing two different jobs. A pack that supplies only cartridges has not covered this fountain.

Start with the right filter product

The PLWF305 is the Dockstream RFID Smart, a 3 L fountain on the RFID generation with Plug-in · RFIDoperation. On PETLIBRO’s model comparison page, each fountain is linked to a specific replacement filter—and this model is linked to the Dockstream RFID Replacement Filter, not the filter shared by PLWF005, PLWF105, and PLWF115.

Model-specific filterUse the RFID-specific replacement filter

PETLIBRO's model comparison assigns PLWF305 its own Dockstream RFID Replacement Filter, which is a different product from the classic Dockstream filter. That RFID filter includes a pre-filter sponge alongside the cartridge, so check that a pack supplies both parts.

This matters commercially. The classic Dockstream Replacement Filter page states that it is “only available for the Water Fountain of Model PLWF005 / PLWF115 / PLWF105.” PLWF305 is not in that list. A pack aimed at the original generation is therefore not the article PETLIBRO points this fountain at, however similar the pieces may look.

Pump-cover pre-filter. Its job is protective rather than purifying—it guards the pump area from hair and debris.

PETLIBRO’s RFID filter page lists the pre-filter sponge as part of what the product provides. That is useful confirmation that both parts are expected, but the page states no model numbers of its own—it says only “Compatible with Dockstream.” The model-level link comes from the comparison page, not from the product page.

Before you buy: check the parts, not the count

Third-party listings advertise a total—“24 filters + 24 sponges”—which tells you about quantity and almost nothing about fit. A more useful reading order:

  1. Does the listing name PLWF305 explicitly? A model list that stops at the original Dockstream range is not addressing this fountain, and neither is PETLIBRO’s own Amazon filter listing, which names five models but not this one.
  2. Does it describe the sponge separately from the cartridge? If the description only ever says “filter,” the sponge is unaddressed.
  3. Does the seller distinguish a pump-cover sponge from a generic pre-filter? If not, treat the sponge as unverified for this model.
  4. Compare against the parts currently in your fountain. They are the most direct reference you have.

Where a listing covers the cartridge convincingly but says nothing specific about the sponge, the honest conclusion is a split one: the cartridge claim is supported and the sponge claim is not affirmed. You can act on that without needing a single yes or no.

Confirming you actually have a PLWF305

Because this model takes a different filter from its neighbours, it is worth being certain before ordering. PETLIBRO documents an on-device identifier for this fountain specifically: the PN code “can be found on the right side of the Type-C charging port, underneath the water tank base.”

That is a PN code rather than the Model No., and PETLIBRO’s guidance elsewhere is that the Model No. appears on the product or the package. If you are working from the fountain alone, the RFID tray is the distinguishing feature—no other Dockstream in the range has one. See how to find your model number.

What we could not confirm

  • The physical dimensions or exact media quantities of either part. The RFID filter page names its materials but gives no specifications.
  • How many filters and sponges the official RFID pack contains. The page does not state a per-pack count.
  • Whether any third-party sponge fits the PLWF305 pump housing. No manufacturer approval of a third-party sponge was found.
  • Whether the RFID system interacts with filter identification in any way that affects replacements.
  • Whether the classic Dockstream filter would physically seat in this fountain. PETLIBRO simply points this model at a different product; it does not say what happens if you use the other one.
